A customer once brought us two infrared emitters that looked much alike and carried the same power rating, and asked: “Why does one heat noticeably faster and stay cooler on the back?” One look at the reverse side made it obvious — the faster one had a gold coating on its back, and the slower one did not. When choosing an infrared emitter, people are used to comparing wavelength and power, but they often miss a detail that makes a big difference to efficiency: the reflector coating.
Without a reflector, half the energy escapes backwards
The infrared an emitter gives off radiates in every direction — it will not obligingly travel only towards the workpiece — so if there is no reflective layer behind the emitter, the energy radiated backwards and sideways is simply lost into the oven body and the surroundings, and only part of it actually reaches the heating face. That escaping energy does not just waste electricity; it also raises the temperature of the oven walls, the mechanism and everything nearby, which in turn takes effort to cool back down.
A gold-coated reflector wins the energy back
The approach is to plate a layer of gold on the back of the emitter. Gold is highly reflective in the near-infrared band — published data puts pure gold’s infrared reflectivity above 95% — and because gold is chemically stable and does not readily oxidise or degrade at high temperature, its reflectivity does not deteriorate over long-term use the way ordinary metals do. This gold layer reflects the infrared that would otherwise be lost backwards onto the heating face, nearly doubling the useful radiation — so the same electricity does more work.
It has a second effect too: the gold layer acts like a thermal barrier, keeping the energy out front and leaving the area behind the emitter noticeably cooler — which is exactly why that customer felt the “back is cooler.” With no energy escaping rearwards, it naturally stays cool, and the surrounding mechanism and sensors are better protected too.
What it means for you
- More energy-efficient: the same heating result for less electricity — and the more volume you run, the more you save.
- More uniform: a twin-tube design paired with a wider reflective face produces a flatter, more controllable heat field than a single round tube.
- More space-efficient: with higher power density per unit area, you can reach the required temperature within a limited oven length.
So when selecting, do not fixate on wattage alone — the reflector design and coating quality matter just as much, because two lamps of the “same power” can put very different amounts of energy onto the workpiece. The twin-tube emitters TingHao uses come with a gold-coated reflector. We are based in Nanzi, Kaohsiung and serve manufacturers across Kaohsiung, Tainan, Pingtung and southern Taiwan.
